Google revives smart speaker lineup with Gemini-powered hardware

The device marks a departure from the command-and-control era of smart home tech. Users can issue complex, multi-part instructions—such as dimming lights while simultaneously triggering music and timers—without needing to memorize specific syntax. The AI also processes mid-sentence corrections, allowing users to pivot their requests in real-time. To facilitate more fluid interaction, the speaker features 10 new voices and an updated microphone system that supports "Continued Conversation," enabling follow-up questions without repeating the "OK, Google" trigger phrase.

While the hardware retains a familiar 3.4 x 4.2-inch textile design, the software introduces a tiered value proposition. A standard set of Gemini features comes with the device, but Google is gating advanced capabilities behind a new "Google Home Premium" subscription. Priced at $10 monthly or $100 annually, the premium tier unlocks Gemini Live for open-ended, conversational dialogue and provides AI-driven analysis of Nest camera footage, including summaries of household activity. To drive adoption, Google is bundling a six-month trial with the speaker, which is available for pre-order now ahead of a wider rollout later this month.
