Anthropic Joins Frontier Carbon Removal Coalition

The expansion brings Frontier’s total capital to $1.8 billion, supporting a portfolio that has already contracted nearly $700 million across 50 projects to sequester 1.8 million tons of carbon. While founding members like Stripe, Google, and Shopify established the group to offset unavoidable emissions such as corporate air travel, Anthropic’s entry highlights a new pressure on AI firms to address their environmental footprint. The company has previously favored an "all of the above" energy strategy, often criticized for relying on high-polluting power, making this its first formal climate-related deal.

Frontier is simultaneously shifting its operational strategy, moving away from a wide array of smaller bets toward fewer, high-impact projects capable of removing a gigaton of CO2 annually. These new contracts will span eight to ten years and require vendors to demonstrate a viable path toward government subsidies. By targeting a 2040 horizon, the coalition aims to foster a market that eventually transitions from private corporate underwriting to public sector support, mirroring the long-term dependency models seen in global water infrastructure.
